KALLONI

The Municipality of Kalloni consisting of seven villages, which are Anemotia, Skalohori, Philia, Parakila, Skala Kallonis, Papiana-Kerami-Argiana, Agra, Dafia and Arisvi, is situated in the centre of the island.
The area of Kalloni has been the centre and the "lighthouse" of the orthodoxy and the culture. Its contribution to the determination of the education' s level, thanks to its Monasteries and to its historic Metropolis, was very important.

It has been reborn many times from its ashes due to the strong will and insistence of the locals. It is Orthodoxy's and Civilization's lighthouse because of the historic Monasteries, the Metropolis and the local culture.

SETTLEMENTS OF KALLONI
Parakoila
Is a mountain
settlement at the middle of the west coasts of Kalloni Gulf, 12 kilometers away
from Kalloni. This area is full of olive trees and citrus trees.
The village has to show to its visitor a number of picturesque houses, a fine square with coffee shops and a marble tap and the Byzantine church of Archangel. A great cultural activity has been developed by the local people, while the women preserve the tradition of weaving.
Local people are known for their hospitality and are farmers mainly. Also in this area there are the remnants of an old setlement named "Issa"
At the end of the village we can see Skala of Parakoila, with a sandy beach, fish tavern and coffee shops. Going S.E. we lead to Skala Kallonis.
Areana, Kerami, Papeana : Picturesque and tiny settlements found at the 1st Km of the way Kalloni to Skala Kallonis. Characteristic are the small houses with the white painted gardens, the small paved streets and the picturesque coffee shops.
Dafia
Mountain settlement, that we we see first as long as we move
to the main road Kalloni-Eressos, 46 kilometers away from Mytilene. It is a
small settlement with a few vegetation. Local people are farmers mainly, while
they have a brilliant cultural action. At this area is the famous Leimonos
Monastery. A short, small road lead us to the
yard of the monastery, that is full of trees, plants, flowers, birds and
animals. The imposing atmosphere can travel the
visitor to elder years.

Arisvi: It is a small village at the entrance of Kallonis town (1Km before) and 44Km away from the Lesbian capital. Arisvi has roots in ancient times and we can visit the ruins of the ancient town at the Eastern of the village. There we can see the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo too. The village has a picturesque square with perennial plane-trees and pine-trees. There is an interesting church dedicated to Zoodochus Pygis with wonderful wall paintings. The inhabitants are engaged in agriculture as here we find the fertile plain of Kalloni. During the last years the village has near been linked to the town of Kalloni.
Skala Kallonis
At a distance of 4Km through a fantastic landscape we meet the coastal area of Skala Kallonis. It is an organizes port and main tourism resort of the area, with sandy beach, many trees, fish taverns and night clubs. The area of Skala is a significant part of the Kalloni's Wetland proper for sea sports, fishing and walking.

At the fish taverns the visitor can enjoy the sea's delicatessen of Kallonis Bay : sardines, shrimps, oysters, products that in the past were flooding the Asia Minor coasts.

We have to mention here that among the local festivities that take place especially during summer, the festivity of sardine during August, with local music, dance, ouzo and fish foods.

Agra: It is at the Western of the island and at a distance of 68Km away from Mytilene. There are two ways of travelling to the village of Agra : starting from the site of Skala Kallonis or from Eressos. It is a rural village with tradition in the production of dairy products. There are picturesque small houses, cobbled streets and the inhabitants except from cattle-raising, are engaged in agriculture too.

At the Southwestern the road guides us at the entrance of Kallonis Bay, at the coastal sites of Makara and Apothika. They are small fisher ports with few coffee shops and fish taverns. Between these two sites we can see ruins of an ancient Pelasgean wall and other buildings. Following the road parallel to the Kallonis Bay coasts, the landscape changes : it regains the harmonic combination of green and blue.
Anemotia:
It is at a distance of 55Km away from Mytilene.
It is a rural village with picturesque houses and streets. We find it after the
village of Philia on the main road Kalloni - Eressos. Worth noticing is
the Church of Ayios Georgios (1720) with interesting holly icons.
Skalochori: Picturesque rural village, that we meet on the main road Kalloni - Eressos, 58Km away from Mytilene. Worth noticing is the building that houses the school - made of local stone. Here we find a road at the Northern that guides us to the coastal area Kalo Limani or Tsamour Limani.
At the eastern of this site there are ruins of a medieval castle called Omvriokastro. After we return to Skalochori, continuing our tour at the western we meet the Monastery of Perivolis, a tiny paradise of green and water in total contrary to the roughness of the landscape.
Philia
Small picturesque village- 50 kilometers away from Mytilene.
In this village you feel relaxed and tranquill. A few trees, old men relax at
the traditional coffee shop. Remnants of an old city named "Hermopilea"
are left in the area.
MONASTERIES
Monasteries of Kalloni
Monastery of Lemonas - Ayios Ignatios : It is situated in the center of the island and at a distance of 3Km Northwestern of the small town Kalloni inside a basin. Its Cathedral is dedicated to the Taxiarches. The Archbishop of Mythimna Iynatio Ayaliano, whose name is given today to the Monastery, built it in 1523. During the years of the Turkish Occupation it was the unique intellectual center of the island (during the 16th century here was organized a school for the education of the Lesvians).

Also there are : a Museum of Ecclesiastical and Folk Art with a plethora of impressive exhibits as ecclesiastical utensils and various objects, holy icons, fretwork objects etc and the unique in Lesvos Museum of Geology (1990) where we can see the basic Lesvian rocks and the minerals - metals of the island.
The Monastery has been a significant center of religious, national, intellectual, social and charity activity especially during the years of the Turkish occupation but even today it continues the charity through an old people's home and a zoo that are organized. Also we have to notice that inside its territory there are spread many small churches of Byzantine architectural structure.
Monastery of Panayia Myrsiniotissa: It is situated at a distance of 4Km away from the area of Kalloni. It depends on the Monastery of Lemonas. It is Byzantine, and has been organized by Ayios Iynatios in 1523 dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary. Inside the Cathedral the visitor can admire valuable portable holy icons of the Byzantine art, an old fretwork iconostasis and significant wall paintings.

Here was organized a school for girls during the 16th century, significant contribution into the education of the Lesvians during the difficult years of the Turkish occupation.
SALT MARSH
Salt
marsh started to be exploited 19 century and keeps till today with modern and hi
tech machines. The salt marsh of Kalloni Gulf are extend to Kalloni area and
Polichnitos area. Till the first years of the 20th century there were 2 more
small salt marsh, in Perama and Apothika
The salt marsh of Kalloni is the second more important in
production all over Greece. In 1925 started working as a private company.
The salt marsh cultivation starts at 1 April and the salt gathering at 1 September.
During 1980 was 3.000 acres and produced 60.000 tones of salt. The salt marsh used to occupy a great number of workers from the city of Kalloni and Polichnitos, for collecting, cleaning the salt and other works.
Nowadays the salt mash increase the production but do not occupy many workers, since salt production becomes with machinery.
KALLONI NOWADAYS
No
matter where we are on the island, we can go to the Municipality of Kalloni in
less than an hour. In the Municipality of Kalloni we will find a big and modern
market place with shops that can satisfy everybody' s needs.
The Medical Centre of the north west island is situated in the Municipality of Kalloni. The inhabitants have the possibility to get there a full medical and pharmaceutical care
The visitor have the ability to get rest, have fun, see sights, and many other things.
There were two factors that reveal the richness of Kalloni area. Kalloni Gulf and the lowland.
The lowland of Kalloni is the biggest plain of the island, has many waters, rich soil and the sun that worms it 3.000 hours each year. Very famous also is the wetland of Kalloni.

Here the great philoshoper Theophrastos and Phenias from
Eressos put the base of natural history, by styding the fish, the shells, the
plants and the flowers of the Gulf.
The visitor may have fun by watching the fiestes and the local celebrations, about nature and people.
Taste Keskek a traditional food that is been made and shared for free, see the horse races, were the young people ride their horses and run.
Local music players will please you with their music and dancers will amuse you. Very known is the celebration of the monastery Leimonos at 14 October.
